Is Chiropractic Safe for Kids? What Every San Antonio Parent Should Know
Pediatric chiropractic is one of the most misunderstood areas of healthcare. Dr. Dan Foss explains the safety, the evidence, and why children may actually need chiropractic more urgently than adults.

When parents first hear that their child might benefit from chiropractic care, the reaction is often concern. They picture the forceful spinal manipulations they may associate with adult chiropractic and wonder whether something like that is appropriate — or safe — for a child.
The concern is understandable. The premise behind it, though, is based on a misconception.
Pediatric Chiropractic Is Not Adult Chiropractic
The techniques used for children are fundamentally different from adult chiropractic care. Adjustments for infants use no more pressure than you would use to check the ripeness of a peach — a few grams of force, precisely applied with a fingertip to a specific spinal segment. There is no cracking, no twisting, no high-velocity manipulation of any kind.
For older children and teenagers, the techniques are scaled to age, size, and development. Dr. Foss assesses every pediatric patient individually and uses the approach most appropriate for that specific child. A ten-year-old receives different care than a fifteen-year-old, who receives different care than a newborn.
The safety record of pediatric chiropractic is excellent. Multiple reviews of the research literature have found that serious adverse events from properly applied pediatric chiropractic are extremely rare — far rarer than the side effects of many medications routinely given to children. The American Chiropractic Association and the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association both recognize the safety and effectiveness of appropriate chiropractic care for children.
Why Kids Need Chiropractic
The argument for pediatric chiropractic begins at birth. The birth process — even under ideal circumstances — places significant compressive and rotational forces on the infant's cervical spine. In prolonged labors, forceps or vacuum-assisted deliveries, and emergency C-sections, these forces are amplified considerably.
Small misalignments acquired during delivery can interfere with the infant's nervous system from the very beginning of life. The nervous system controls digestion, sleep, immune function, motor development, and virtually every other biological process. When it's compromised, the downstream effects can be wide-ranging.
This is why many pediatric chiropractors — including Dr. Foss — recommend a gentle post-birth evaluation for all infants, particularly those born with any complications or who show early signs of asymmetry, feeding difficulty, colic, or sleep disturbance.
Conditions in Children That Respond to Chiropractic
Colic — the pattern of excessive, inconsolable crying in otherwise healthy infants — has been associated with cervical spine tension in multiple studies. Several randomized controlled trials have found that infants with colic who receive gentle chiropractic adjustments show significant reduction in crying time compared to controls. For sleep-deprived parents at their wit's end, this can be life-changing.
Ear infections are among the most common reasons children visit pediatricians. Recurrent ear infections often involve Eustachian tube dysfunction — and research suggests that gentle upper cervical adjustments may improve Eustachian tube drainage, reducing the frequency of infection. Many families with children prone to recurrent ear infections find chiropractic care dramatically reduces the cycle.
Torticollis — a rotational head tilt caused by tight or shortened sternocleidomastoid muscles, often acquired during delivery — responds extremely well to early chiropractic intervention. The sooner it's addressed, the better the outcome. Untreated torticollis can contribute to plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), developmental asymmetries, and chronic cervical dysfunction.
Scoliosis in adolescents is actively monitored and managed by Dr. Foss, who uses the Sacro-Occipital Technique to address the pelvic and structural imbalances that drive curve progression. While chiropractic does not reverse scoliosis, it can slow progression and significantly reduce the pain and functional limitations associated with it.
Postural problems from device use — the text neck, rounded shoulders, and forward head posture now appearing in children as young as eight — are best addressed early, before structural changes have time to become established. Dr. Foss sees an increasing number of young patients with cervical curve loss and thoracic dysfunction driven by excessive screen time.
Sports injuries are common in San Antonio's active student athlete population. Chiropractic evaluation and treatment of ankle sprains, knee pain, shoulder injuries, and spinal injuries from contact sports produces faster recovery and helps prevent the re-injury patterns that often follow incompletely healed athletic injuries.
What a Pediatric Visit Looks Like
At Pura Vida Chiropractic, a pediatric visit begins with a thorough history — including birth history for younger children — and a complete physical examination appropriate for the child's age. Dr. Foss explains everything to both the child and the parent, and proceeds with treatment only when everyone is comfortable with the plan.
Many children — especially young ones who have had previous bad experiences with medical offices — are anxious at first. Dr. Foss and his team take whatever time is needed to make children feel safe and at ease. The vast majority of pediatric patients leave happily and look forward to their next visit.
A Lifetime of Spinal Health Starts Early
The spinal habits and structural patterns established in childhood become the baseline from which adult spinal health develops. A child with well-corrected spinal alignment, normal cervical and lumbar curves, and good postural habits enters adulthood with a significant structural advantage.
A child with long-standing cervical kyphosis, pelvic imbalance, or compensatory scoliosis starts adulthood already playing from behind.
The best time to establish a child's spinal health is early. The second best time is now.
